President Karzai has at last bowed to the international pressure and has promised to amend a new law on marital rape and child marriage, which provoked violent clashes in Afghan. The President had signed the Shia Family Law, which reintroduced the policies of the Taleban era, such as banning married women from leaving home without their husband’s permission. Consitution of Afghanistan guarantees equality of sexes and the country is a signatory to the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. Mr. Karzai claimed that he was unaware of the contents of the law when he signed it. He has now promised to do amends and adhere to international law on human rights.
